Google Ads or local SEO: which should you spend on first?

Ads work in days and stop when you stop paying. SEO takes months and keeps going. How to pick, and when the answer is neither.

The trade in one line

Google Ads works in days, costs money every month, and stops the day you stop paying. Local SEO takes three to six months, costs money every month while it builds, and keeps working for a long time after you stop. That is genuinely the whole trade-off. Which one is right depends on how long you can wait and what a customer is worth to you.

Start with ads if

You need the phone ringing this month

New business, slow quarter, a van sitting idle. SEO cannot help you in weeks and pretending otherwise wastes your money. Ads can be live in about a week.

You can afford a monthly budget on top of a fee

Remember these are two separate bills: our management is $150 a month, and your ad budget goes straight to Google from your own card. A few hundred a month of budget is a realistic start for one trade in one town. Below that the data is too thin to learn from.

You want to find out what people actually search for

This is the underrated reason. A couple of months of ads tells you exactly which phrases bring people who call, which is the best possible brief for what to build SEO pages about afterwards.

Start with SEO if

You can wait a few months

If the business is ticking over and this is about next year, SEO is better value per dollar. Traffic that does not stop when the card declines is worth a great deal.

Your margins will not carry a cost per click

Some trades have clicks that cost real money. If a customer is worth $80 to you and a click costs $9, ads are a hard road. If a customer is worth $4,000, ads are almost free by comparison.

You are in a smaller town where nobody is trying

In Hartford or Dell Rapids, the competition for local searches is thin, and a handful of good pages plus a properly set up Google Business Profile can get you to the top without a monthly ad spend. In Sioux Falls proper it is a longer fight.

The honest answer is often both, then taper

Run ads while the SEO builds

This is what we recommend most often when the budget allows. Ads cover the three to six months that SEO needs, and the search data from the ads tells you which pages are worth building. As the free rankings arrive, the ad budget comes down. It is more expensive for one quarter and considerably cheaper by the end of the year.

When the answer is neither, yet

  • Your site takes nine seconds to open on a phone
  • Your site has no page about the service you want to be found for
  • Your contact form does not work — worth checking before anything else
  • Your Google Business Profile has the wrong category or no photos
  • In all of these, fix the foundation first — paid traffic pointed at a bad site buys expensive bounces, and the free listing fixes are often free
